CompSoc

If you aren't aware CompSoc have not had a "proper" backup strategy in ages, simply put there is too much data and not enough space to back it up to. For the past 6, or so, months backups have been done simply by taking a copy of the data to a second disk, and while far from ideal it was the only financially feasible plan for backing up 100+ GB of stuff. Last night the situation changed, one of our members donated a tape library with a capacity of about 4TB, more than enough for us.

Now, we don't know all the nitty gritty details of it yet, we saw the library for a total of about 5 minutes as it was quickly dumped in the CompSoc office but suffice to say that we are very excited as to what this will allow us and future admin to achieve, mainly a fully backuped up operating environment. Current plans would have this robot running within the next couple of weeks but we know how these things typically turn out. Anyway, there should be some pictures of this beast up tomorrow and we will keep you posted on any progress.
