Demons on ITV
Demons is different enough to Buffy that they won’t get sued, but not that different. Borrowing EXTREMELY heavily, from calling the lead ‘watcher’ character who shows up knowing everything and introducing Luke to his destiny Rupert Galvin, to calling the weapons store and information room they have hidden away ‘the stacks’ and the ‘revelation’ scene around where Ruby* took Xander’s place and had everything explained to her.
The special effects are better at times - when the monkey demon appears was one I liked - but then the guy with a pointy nose that had me looking for elastic, and long finger nails that look like ones I’d buy at halloween. I’d have thought noses were relatively easily to build with latex. Apparently not.
Sadly, the dialogue isn’t anywhere near as sparkling though there were one or two nice moments. Nose-guy (dressed like Spike) ‘we said if you didn’t come alone we would hurt her. Subtle distinction but I’m particular with my words’. He also has the Spike-cockney accent to go with his black leather jacket and red shirt.
Taking the inspiration from Dracula was a nice touch, though given the lead guy knew the book I’m surprised he didn’t bat an eyelid or make a comment when introduced to Mina Harker. Not exactly sure if she’s supposed to be the Mina Harker yet or a descendant.

If it’s a premise that sounds familiar, that’s because it is a shameless, and mostly charmless, rip-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which isn’t to say it doesn’t have its (scary) moments.
The irony of this being in the article titled ‘Television not to miss in 2009‘ is hopefully obvious.
I wouldn’t agree it was entirely charmless. I actually quite like Philip Glennister, and think he has potential. I just think the writers - and I can’t find out anywhere who they are which doesn’t fill me with confidence - are as familiar with Buffy as I am and as experienced professiional writers.
* Named so almost entirely, I think, so they can use the Kaiser chief’s song, Ruby while the lead runs to her rescue. What the odds they use Ruby, Don’t take your love to town at some point as well?!
