Essay Questions and Recurrent Themes
Food
Nobody eats normally. Marla steals food from the dead, and
Tyler pollutes soup. The Narrator only eats twice: once he eats mustard
from the pot with a knife and later he eats cereal from a tupperware box.
We also see a hideous airline meal in close-up, an d a single-serving
mint.
Traffic
With all the fuss about fists, nobody has
noticed the dreadfully irresponsible road-crossing in the film. Marla
continually walks through traffic as if it ought to stop for her, and The
Narrator soon starts dodging BMWs and nearly causing crashes. He even
walks in front of a bus, but that could be because the driver is a
spacemonkey.
Airports
The film spends a lot of time in
deserted airports. They seem to symbolise the most plastic and corporate
places on earth, with the most horrible lighting.
