GIRL AFRAID

Girl afraid
Where do his intentions lay ?

Or does he even have any ?

She says :

"He never really looks at me
I give him every opportunity
In the room downstairs
He sat and stared
In the room downstairs
He sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again !"

I'll never make that mistake again
I'll never make that mistake again

Boy afraid
Prudence never pays

And everything she wants costs money

"But she doesn't even LIKE me !
And I know because she said so
In the room downstairs
She sat and stared
In the room downstairs
She sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again !"

A fantastic and often overlooked song, possibly the most perfect synthesis of bass and lead guitar ever devised. Listen to Rourke's bassline and the way it fits in with the tune - it's absolutely amazing; it was reputedly originally intended as a piano part.
Morrissey paints one of his little scenes again with formidable style, and in such a minimalist way. I don't know of many other lyricists who could cram so much pathos and meaning into so few everyday words.
Undoubtedly holder of the prestigious trophy for Most Underrated Song.
