A doom-laden start for a mostly-upbeat album. Crashing guitars and a clanging drum part combine to make a strong opening track.
Displaying Morrissey's love of parodoxical phrases, his opening statement "I want to start from before the beginning" is in tune with the rest of the lyrics. A seemingly random mish-mash of images, thoughts, and events, Maladjusted aims no lower than providing an overview of everything. A deeply referential and knowing song. In true style, the lyrics end with a falsetto banality - after his vivid descriptions of "semi-perilous" lives, all he gets in reply is "there's nothing wrong with you !"
Interestingly, with its reference to Fulham and "working girls", this song seems to be inspired from the film "The L-Shaped Room", the same film from which Morrissey took the opening sample of The Queen Is Dead.
The quote at the start of the song is Anthony Newley in the film "Cockleshell Heroes".
