A Profile of Xan Eardley

Last Updated: Monday, 2 February, 1998

Having asked the band members to fill out an informal "questionnaire" in their own words, here is Xan's submission. I have taken the liberty of reformatting it, and correcting some spelling mistakes/typing errors (he e-mailed it to me), but otherwise it is all his own work:-

Hiya Mark!

Name: Xan Eardley
DOB: 25/05/73

Description: Let's see how modest I can't be! Short (i.e. nowhere near 6'), very dark brown hair. Big nose. Well not that big really. No, quite small, in fact (Someone may tell you otherwise, but they could be telling porkies, and I'm not at all touchy about the size of my nose). Well, you know what they say: big nose...

....lots of snot.

Oh, green eyes and vaguely muscular arms as well.

Position in the band: Pisshead, Mandolin, Flute + equipmenty stuff

Life history: Too tedious to recall, but recently failed degree in Informatics and Church History (yes, laugh; I do) University College Lampeter. Crap college. Only go to Lampeter to get off your face. Don't even consider getting an education there!

Other Musical ventures: The Biblical Sense (Now defunct). Folky-rock group infamous for the plagiarism of "The Hill" By Xavier Moonchild (music J.Nash, I think).

The Biblical Sense consisted of:

  • Paul Tree - guitar, vox
  • Andy (off-)White - vox
  • Andy Wallis - percussioninsh(sic)
  • Toddy Advani - sometime vox
  • Me - flute & synths & engineering.

The Condition (originally The Condition of Muzak, after a Michael Moorcock book). Primarily a solo-type thing, but sometimes involving other people. Better songs (ie ones which people other than myself like) include "Forget It" (released on a tape with "Round and Round Run Around", "We Should" and "Call it What You Want" (I might still have a copy left if anyone wants to hear how dire it is)), "Who are You?" and "Missing", which was done with James Martin on guitar.

Musical Tastes: Classical (modern especially), Goth (NIN, Sister,Mission etc), Hawkwind + other odd stuff, Blues.

Anything else: I work as Systems and Network Administrator for Parity Solutions Ltd, in their Hemel Hempstead office. Oh, I also go out with a gorgeous little girl called Toddy, who has the same vital statistics as Kylie. Ha! (and no, I don't have any pictures of her that you would want ;) )
(Boots don't develop that sort, do they Xan?)
(Incidentally, since this profile was originally written, Xan and Todd have become man and wife. Aaaahhhh.....)

A Brief Note From Xav:

Although Joseph was mostly responsible for the music to "The Hill", the original arrangement was by both Xav and Joe - and Xav even provided some (albeit limited) musical input. Later versions are generally classed as being arranged by the whole band, since it is very much a song that is greater than the sum of its parts, although particular note should go to individuals for the following contributions:

Dave Murphy
for adding suitable drums to a song that Xav thought wouldn't work with them! Xav now acknowledges that this is one of those tracks that can be made to sound good with any arrangement. The rim shots work particularly well here.

Dave Hailey
for adding the "Floyd-a-like" guitar intro (with Joe) and generally stealing all Xav's spectral space during his instrumental break.

Michelle Laybourn
for those now famous octave leaps on the bass

Xavier Moonchild
for providing the instrumental break that spawned the following conversation (more than once): "I'm sure you didn't play it like that last time", "No. It's called improvisation."
