"Funeral Blues"

Last Updated: Friday, 20 February, 1998

Background

The background to this one is simple: Xav holds the philosophy that little or nothing should be above humour. Whilst he admits that there are some areas that are less than savoury, and catered for by sick jokes and black comedy, he doesn't believe that death should be one of them. In fact, so strong is that belief, that he wants this song played at his cremation, and has threatened to haunt anyone who prevents this!

Funeral Blues is performed to a fairly standard 12 bar blues riff, and was originally written as an improvisation between Xav and Joe. Since then, the lyrics have been written down and tidied up, and the music changed a little, but nothing else.

Funeral Blues

I woke up this morning, my woman was dead.
Our pet alsation had bit off her head.
So I went to my daughter's room and she was dead too,
So now I don't know what I'm gonna do.

'Cos I'm getting those funeral blues.
I'm getting filled up with those funeral blues.

So I went on holiday to calm myself down,
But while I was there I saw my sister drown.
My brother-in-law, he was driven insane,
So he got a shotgun and he blew out his brains.

And I'm getting those funeral blues.
I'm getting filled up with those funeral blues.

My mother's gone mad - she's out on the loose.
She strangled my father and then made a noose,
And hung herself until she was dead.
So now I've got a body hanging up in my shed

And I'm getting those funeral blues.
I'm getting filled up with those funeral blues.

So now things are going from bad to worse -
Most of my family taking trips in a hearse.
It must have been me, I think I must have been cursed,
From the very day that my mother gave birth.

And I'm getting those funeral blues.
I'm getting filled up with those....
I'm getting filled up with those....
I'm getting filled up to the top with those funeral blues.
